Chapter one · Before and beginning

There was a life before the dispute.

An artist. A volunteer. A law student ready to learn and lead. The story begins with what I had built, not what later went wrong.

Before law school / 2018–2021

Independence, art and purpose

I was living independently and developing a career as an acrylic painter. My work included original paintings and commissions, as well as memorial portraits for families affected by homicide. Alongside art, I volunteered, pursued legal mentorship and cared deeply about victims and young people affected by violence.

Creative practice

A working artist

Original artwork, commissions and photographs from my studio document a life and artistic practice established before law school.

Project Aaron

Giving back through art

In memory of my brother, Project Aaron offered no-cost memorial paintings to the loved ones of homicide victims in the Greater Toronto Area.

March 31, 2021

Public recognition

A Toronto Star feature by Ann Marie Elpa documented Project Aaron, my family’s story and the purpose behind my artwork.

Spring to September 2021

Opportunity and a new beginning

On April 16, 2021, Western Law offered me admission to the JD class beginning that September. I accepted, prepared academically and financially, and joined the Class of 2024 induction on September 7.

Studying, showing up and representing others

The early record includes my class schedules, readings and case-briefing materials, library and café study photographs, office-hour resources, and the daily work of becoming a law student.

Academics

Learning and engagement

Course resources, library research, study notes, class timetables and academic office-hour opportunities were part of my routine.

Student leadership

Elected first-year SLS representative

I campaigned in September and served as one of three first-year Student Legal Society representatives. The contemporary representative profile confirms my role.

Professional development

From mentee to panelist

In November 2021, I served as a panelist in a Lil Sistah's legal-career workshop involving the Black Female Lawyers Network and the Ontario Justice Education Network.

Beyond the classroom

A fuller life continued

I remained connected to art, volunteering, Black legal networks, student activities and professional opportunities. My 2022 BLSA Canada conference registration adds to that record of involvement and initiative.

The question is not simply what happened at Western. It is what happened to the education, career opportunities, independence and everyday life I had already worked to build.
